Nitrates are present in most tap water to some degree, mainly derived from pesticides and decaying organic matter. Nitrates, which are toxic to fish, are broken down in tropical aquariums by bacteria, which then convert them into harmless compounds.
Levels in excess of 20ppm (parts-per-million) may cause harm to your fish, and tap water can contain upto 50ppm. Therefore, in order to minimise the stress caused to the fish, many people choose to remove nitrates prior to filling or topping up their tanks. This also helps the bacteria break down the nitrates present in your tank's filter and gravel bed as the level that they have to deal with remains manageable.
Prior to purchasing this system it is recommended that you check the level of nitrates in your mains supplied water. This system is designed for people who have high nitrate levels in excess of 20ppm.
This filter is intended for tank filling only. It is not intended to be used as a circulating filter.
The replacement cartridges for this system are the NR600 cartridges which can also be found on our website
This filter system is supplied with hozelock compatible fittings, but you can select the fitting kit option which is for mains pipe work. The fitting kit will provide you with a saddle valve to pierce the copper pipe and a 10m length of tube to attach the output.
Important Note: The life of the filter is proportional to the loading of Nitrate (NO3) and Sulphate (SO4) in the source water and the volume of water used. The more Nitrate and Sulphate in the source water and the more water you use, the faster the filter will exhaust. If you require advice prior to purchasing please contact us.

. Performance wise, havent had any problems at all. Has done the job intended so far, has almost removed all Nitrate from the water and kept the PH, GH etc, so great for my Malawi Cichlids.

. The unit is very well designed and thought out and with the 10 meter tube that comes with the fitting unit makes for safe and easy water changes to our tropical aquarium.

. My tapwater has on average 30ppm of nitrates, this was reduced to almost zero on first use of the filter. The second time of use it reduced the nitrates to about 5ppm, if these results are constantly repeated then i will be very satisfied. I filtered about 40 litres each time.

. Initial tests show that this product operates excellently, lowering our water Nitrate from over 40ppm to 0! With 30 litres of water through the filter water readings are still 0 at the output.

. I am still monitoring the tank Nitrate levels, but early indications are very good. It will be very interesting to see how long the filter element lasts too.
