It is most commonly used by fishkeepers as nitrates/nitrites in the water can present major problems for the growth and reproduction of the fish.
The life of this cartridge is proportional to nitrate levels and usage - however - testing the efficiency of this system (i.e. to check the cartridge) can be easily achieved using over the counter test.
Important Note
The life of the filter is proportional to the loading of Nitrate (NO3) and Sulphate (SO4) in the source water and the volume of water used. The more Nitrate and Sulphate in the source water and the more water you use, the faster the filter will exhaust.

. The helpful Pozzani person also suggested a "Hozelock" set up would suit me (and the fishes) and Voila! I bought one and have been using it to filter poisonous Nitrates out of my tap water before my water changes. It takes almost all the Nitrates out, so my fishes are healthier as a consequence AND the Pozzani people sent me an email reminder when it was time to get a new innards.
